Acting is one of the most underrated art forms in the world.
There are definitely more challenging art forms but acting can seem deceptively simple. Because we all walk, talk, smile, frown, laugh, and cry we - the general public - all think that acting is easy. Just laugh when you're supposed to or cry when you're supposed to, simple right?
It doesn't work like that.
Add the pressure of learning lines, movement, or blocking that at first can feel very forced and hard to remember, and a time limit - you usually only have a few hours to prepare an audition - and it becomes impossible to craft a performance that seems organic and real.
And then the nerves kick in and make you feel self-conscious and make you doubt and judged everything you've worked on.
Acting is supposed to seem effortless, the character can show effort but you never want to see the acting. Walking in someone else's shoes is challenging and it should be given a lot of space and time to figure out. This is why it takes time to become a great actor. It takes experience to know "instinctively" what to do and how to act and react. It takes knowing your instrument to be able to combat the nerves that can sabotage a performance.
Once, when coaching a young and inexperienced actor, the director saw me and asked, "Why can't he just do it like you do it?"
I said, "What's the difference between wine and grape juice?" He had no answer, so I said, "Time."
Years of training and experience add the nuanced flavors to a part and that makes all the difference.
I will teach you how to work, and have fun doing it. You will learn how to relax and prepare so that you can give the powerful and nuanced performance you want to give.
My philosophy is simple. As we rehearse the material, we will work to find the character, relationships and the actions that fit the audition. At the end of the session, you will feel confident enough to give the best perfermance possible.
Have fun. Stay loose and never take yourself too seriously. Good ideas come when you are relaxed.
ONE HOUR COACHING

A one-hour coaching session can be either in person or online (Skype/FaceTime).
Together we will break down the audition so that you feel comfortable and prepared.
IF YOU ARE A NEW CLIENT
- Please come in 10 minutes before your appointment so we can get to know each other.
- If possible, have your sides/script at least an hour before we meet so you can be familiar with the piece.
- We will break down every beat of each scene, paying special attention to character and relationships.
- Come prepared: know the audition, know the character, casting director, and have some opinions about what we are going to do.
- We will have a follow-up call after your audition so we can find what worked/didn't work/etc.

SCRIPT BREAKDOWN
BE PREPARED BEFORE YOU WALK ON THE SET

You booked the part now what? I will go over the script with you scene by scene. Rehearsing every moment.
We will envision the scenes, we will get on our feet, image where things are, and play the scenes out full. Blocking may change when you get on set, but by having done all the legwork ahead of time, you'll have the confidence and experience to take what you have learned in class and apply it to your work on set.
CAREER DEVELOPMENT

- How to navigate the ins/outs of Hollywood.
- Creative ways to get your foot in the door.
- You should be doing one thing a day for your acting career, I'll help you stay on target/set your goals.
